Postmortem
Being able, now, to sit back and reflect on the progress I've made since the jam started, I can tell I've gone through a lot in just one short week. At first, it was a leap of faith going into this. Not only had I not participated in a game jam before this one, I hadn't completed a project to such a degree at all. The closest I had gotten was a singular level with a few missing textures. Granted, there were a few basic mechanics thrown in, and the project could be played from start to finish, that all still took me over two months to complete. Jumping from that to a finished game made in a week, quite a daunting task. That being said, I think the jam went well. I believe I managed the workload appropriately, and had everything done I wanted done by the time I had planned. Not to say it was easy, but it was manageable.
As for the amount of time I spent on the jam, I can safely say I spent at the very least a solid hour or two each day minimum. On the other side of the coin, there were days that I spent near 10 hours making sure everything was going as expected. I'd say I averaged 5 hours a day each day in development, playtesting, and troubleshooting. If I were to make a guess, I think I spent around 40 hours total on this project.
During this process, I certainly learned my strengths and weaknesses in game development. I'm decent at troubleshooting, and programming wasn't too difficult once I found what direction I was taking the project. I can't say I'm the best with creating audio, but implementation wasn't that difficult. I'd say my weakest link would be texturing and modelling; creating assets that look good. Granted, I found my direction was highly stylized, but I could have certainly added more detail to the textures and models to make them look both stylistic and pleasing to look at. Overall, though, I'm pleased with my performance in this jam, and I look forward to creating more games in the near future.
