The Planning Phase
When starting this project, I originally had in mind a similar but more complex version of the concept I ended up with. Essentially, the player would run around and leave behind a trail of color, that much hasn't changed. However, in the original version, whenever the player would overlap their own colored trail, the area surrounded by the trail would be filled in as well. During development this portion was scrapped due to the limitations set by how the trail itself was implemented.
I believe this concept could be quite fun if fine-tuned correctly. There's always a sense of fun in healthy competition, and joy found when your name or initials are towards the top of a leaderboard. I have no reason to believe that, unless completely and utterly fumbled, this project won't also hold that same sense of enjoyment.
As for games that have a similar concept, there are two that come immediately to mind. A more popular example of the colored area control concept would be Nintendo's Splatoon series of games. The execution of this idea is obviously different, however the core of both games retains a striking similarity. The other example would be a smaller web-based game called slither.io. This is more similar in execution, as in that game you play as a snake (or for the sake of argument, a colored trail), and you seek to diminish the size of your opponents while simultaneously gaining your own size.
